A bakery website that takes cake orders you can actually make

A bakery does not run out of tables, it runs out of oven hours. The week before a holiday the orders arrive faster than anyone can bake, and a plain contact form takes every one of them. We build websites for New Jersey bakeries and caterers where the order form knows your lead times, your daily limit and the dates you are closed, and where a catering inquiry arrives with a head count and a date.

Custom orders

A cake order form that stops at your capacity

A custom cake order is a small project: size, servings, flavor, filling, writing on top, a picture of what the customer has in mind, a pickup date and an allergy note. Collected by direct message, it takes a dozen replies. Collected by one form, it arrives as a finished request.

The form also does the job of saying no. It knows how many custom cakes you can finish each day, the minimum notice for a tiered cake, and the dates you are closed, so a customer cannot request a wedding cake for tomorrow morning. The quote request with photos demo shows how photo uploads work in a step-by-step form like this. Its sample company is a home repair business, and a cake version would ask for the details in the list here.

Holiday rush

Pre-order mode for the weeks that decide the year

Thanksgiving pies, Christmas cookies, Easter breads, Eid sweets and graduation cakes each have a week when the whole month's orders land.

  1. 01

    Open the pre-order page

A holiday page opens with the menu, the prices and the pickup days. Regular customers get the link by email or text.

  2. 02

    Cutoffs and daily limits

Each pickup day has a limit. When Wednesday is full, it shows as sold out and customers pick another day.

  3. 03

    Close it automatically

The page stops taking orders at the cutoff date, and the form goes back to normal. No one has to remember to take it down.

  4. 04

The order list for the kitchen

A list sorted by pickup day tells the bakers what to make. For standard menu items, online ordering with pickup windows works the same way, and the online ordering demo shows it with a pizzeria menu.

Catering

Catering inquiries that arrive with the details

A catering request without a head count and a date is a phone call you have to make before you can quote. The inquiry form asks for the event date, guest count, venue, whether it is pickup, delivery or setup, dietary needs and a budget range, then sends the answers to whoever handles events.

Larger events often need a tasting. The page can offer tasting times from a calendar, or ask for preferred times that your staff confirms. The customer sales board demo shows how event inquiries can move from new request to tasting to booked, using a sample sales pipeline.

If you answer the phone yourself, an AI receptionist is a service we build for the calls you miss while the oven is loaded. Our phone answering walkthrough shows the idea with a pizzeria and is a script, not a live line. It would take standard orders and note custom requests for staff to quote, and it would never say a product is safe for an allergy. Those questions go to a person.

Restaurants

Where a bakery differs from a restaurant site

A restaurant sells a meal in the next hour. A bakery sells a product days ahead, made to a person's specification. Dine-in, takeout and delivery are covered on the restaurants page. This page is about the custom orders, lead times and events that restaurants rarely face.

For an example of a food business site we built, see Alaeddin's Pizza. It is a pizzeria and not a bakery, and we have not built a site for a bakery or caterer. Its online ordering links to the ordering service that restaurant already used.

Search

Showing up on Google and Google Maps for cakes and catering

People search for cakes by occasion and by town. A birthday cake near me and a wedding cake are different searches with different buyers.

  • A page for each kind of order

Birthday, wedding, holiday, cookie tray and corporate catering each get a page with photos of that kind of work.

  • The Business Profile as a shop window

Correct holiday hours, the pre-order link and fresh photos of finished cakes do much of the selling before anyone opens your site.

  • Menu as text

A menu that is readable text, not a photo or a PDF, can match searches for the items you bake. Our local SEO checklist covers the profile and page basics.

  • Reviews, never bought

Ask customers after pickup. The FTC's reviews rule bans fake reviews and any incentive that depends on the review being positive or negative.

NJ rules

Home bakers, allergen wording and food claims

New Jersey has a cottage food program for bakers who work from a home kitchen. According to the Department of Health's cottage food FAQ, a permit holder can take orders and payments online, but products must be transferred to the customer in person: at your home, at the customer's home in New Jersey, or at a New Jersey farmers market, farm stand or temporary food event. USPS, FedEx and other carriers are not allowed, and gross annual sales are capped at $50,000. Labels carry, among other items, the permit number, the ingredients, a "Contains" allergen statement and a notice that the food was made in a home kitchen the Department has not inspected.

The same FAQ says the permit is for sales from a residential home and sends commercial kitchens to the local health department, so a storefront bakery or caterer starts with its local health department. Halal and kosher claims belong on the site only if they are true and you can show where they come from, such as your certifier's paperwork. The site should say what is in a product and what shares a kitchen with it, in words you approve. We do not give legal or food-safety advice; what your permit or license allows is for the Department of Health or your local health department to say, and we build to their answer.

Questions

Questions bakers and caterers ask before a proposal

Can a home baker sell online in New Jersey?

With a cottage food permit, orders and payments can be taken online, but products must be handed over in person, at your home, the buyer's home in New Jersey, or a New Jersey farm market, farm stand or temporary event, and the $50,000 sales cap and label rules apply. The Department of Health's FAQ is the source, and we build the form around what your permit allows.

Can the phone assistant take cake orders?

It can take standard menu orders and record custom requests for staff to price. It does not answer whether something is safe for an allergy. That goes to a person.

How do we handle the holiday rush without overselling?

Each pickup day has a limit and a cutoff. When a day fills, it shows as sold out and the page closes on the cutoff date.

Do I need a separate catering menu?

Usually yes, if catering has its own minimum, lead time and pricing. The catering page lists packages and a request form, and the cake menu stays separate.

Next step

Tell us how many cakes a day your ovens allow

Send your current menu, your lead times and the holidays that matter most. We reply with a written proposal for the order form, the pre-order page and the catering inquiry.
