Listen in on a sample call

Four calls to Demo Kitchen, a made-up pizzeria: a pickup order, a question it should not answer, a changed order and a catering request that goes to a person. Stuck? Press Show me how in the window.

Sample call

A written script, not a live call · nothing is recorded

A pickup order with an add-on. The assistant prices every item from the menu, reads the order back, and sends it only after the caller says yes.

Thanks for calling Demo Kitchen. You are speaking with an automated ordering assistant. Say "staff" at any time to reach a person. What can I get for you?

Thanks for calling Demo Kitchen. You are speaking with an automated ordering assistant. Say "staff" at any time to reach a person. What can I get for you?

The greeting is fixed text from the restaurant settings, not model output, so every caller hears that this is an automated assistant and how to reach a person.

Step by step

How to use it

The same steps the Show me how button walks you through in the window, one at a time.

  1. Pick a call

Each tab is a different sample call: a pickup order, an allergy question, a changed order or a big catering request.

  2. Play the call

Press Play to watch the call unfold, or Next to go one line at a time.

  3. Read along

The caller is on the right and the assistant on the left, like a text conversation.

  4. Watch the order fill in

Items and the total appear as the assistant takes them. Prices come from the menu, never from the assistant guessing.

  5. Peek behind the scenes

Open this to see what the computer heard and did on each line of the call.

The real thing

What the real version does

This walkthrough follows a script. The phone assistant we are building for a restaurant talks with real callers on a normal phone number.

  • Callers can interrupt

It listens while it talks, so a caller can cut in the way they would with a person at the counter.

  • The menu decides the price

Every item and total comes from the restaurant’s ordering system, so the phone never quotes a price the website would not.

  • Repeat callers are recognized

It looks up the caller’s number, greets a regular by name and offers the delivery address they used last time.

  • Orders go to the same kitchen screen

A finished phone order shows up next to the online orders, marked so staff know to collect cash.

Questions

Common questions

Is this a recording of a real call?

No. These are written sample calls to a made-up restaurant. Names, numbers and prices are sample data, and the phone numbers use the 555-01 range set aside for fiction.

What happens when a caller asks for a person?

The greeting tells every caller to say "staff" to reach a person. Allergy questions, catering and anything outside the rules are passed to the restaurant’s chosen phone line.

Can it take delivery orders?

The assistant we are building can. It looks up the spoken address and measures the driving distance before adding a delivery fee. The sample calls here are pickup only.

Under the hood

How it's built

For the technically curious. This is part of our AI phone agents work.

Each turn of the sample calls runs through the same ordering code as the online ordering sample, so the totals the assistant reads out match the menu to the cent. The script only decides what the caller says.

In the system we are building, a phone call arrives over SIP into a LiveKit room. Deepgram turns speech into text, an OpenAI model picks which ordering tool to use, and a text-to-speech voice answers. The model never does the math: it asks the ordering system to add an item, read the order back or send it.

House rules sit outside the model. It will not take card numbers by phone, will not say a dish is safe for an allergy, and hands large or unusual orders to a person.
