How the price is worked out · the sample rate sheet and rules

Invented for this demo. These are not the prices of Liferock Ambulance or any other company. A live estimator reads the company’s own rate sheet, so changing a rate is one edit and every estimate follows it.

How the estimate is calculated

  1. 01A round trip is billed as two legs: the base fee and the one-way miles are charged again for the ride home.
  2. 02Wait time applies to round trips only, while the vehicle waits at the appointment. The first 15 minutes are included, and each 15 minutes or part of it after that is billed.
  3. 03Stairs are billed per flight on each leg. Two flights at home on a round trip bill four: down on the way out, up on the way back.
  4. 04An extra attendant is billed per leg.
  5. 05The after-hours or weekend surcharge is a percentage of the subtotal. Sample rule: pickups before 7:00 a.m. or after 6:00 p.m., and all weekend trips.
  6. 06Amounts are calculated in whole cents. The surcharge is rounded once, to the nearest cent.

Step by step

How to use it

The same steps the Show me how button walks you through in the window, one at a time.

  1. Pick the vehicle

A sedan for a rider who walks, a wheelchair van, or a stretcher van for a rider who lies down.

  2. Set the distance

Slide or type the one-way miles. On a real site, this comes from the pickup and drop-off addresses.

  3. Round trip and waiting

Turn on the ride home, and add how long the van waits at the appointment.

  4. Stairs and extras

Add flights of stairs, a second crew member or an after-hours pickup.

  5. Read the price, line by line

Every charge has its own line, and the total updates as you change the trip.

  6. Send it to dispatch

See the request a real site would send. In this sample nothing is sent.

The real thing

What the real version does

On a transport company’s own site, the estimator uses its real rates and the real addresses of the trip.

  • Addresses instead of a slider

Pickup and drop-off fill in as the family types, and the price follows the driving miles between them.

  • The company’s own rate sheet

Base fees, per-mile rates, stairs, oxygen and wait time come from one rate sheet, so a price change is one edit.

  • One click to dispatch

The trip and the estimate arrive in the dispatch inbox as a tidy email, and staff confirm the ride by phone.

Questions

Common questions

Are these real prices?

No. The rates are made up for this sample and are not the prices of Liferock Ambulance or any other company. Dispatch always confirms the final fare.

Does the estimator book the ride?

Not on its own. It sends the trip and the estimate to the company, and staff confirm the time and the price by phone or email.

What about NJ FamilyCare (Medicaid) rides?

Those rides are booked through the state’s broker, Modivcare, so a private company’s estimator does not price them.

Under the hood

How it's built

For the technically curious. This is part of our web development work.

The estimate is worked out in whole cents from a rate sheet stored as data, and percentages are stored as basis points, so the only rounding happens once, on the after-hours surcharge. A round trip bills two legs, and wait time is billed in 15-minute blocks after the first 15.

On a live site, driving miles come from Google’s Distance Matrix service, called from the server so the map key never reaches the browser. If Google does not answer, the estimate falls back to an OpenStreetMap distance so the family still gets a number.

Every control is a native radio button, slider, number box or checkbox, so the estimator works with a keyboard and a screen reader, and the full default estimate is in the page before any script runs.
