Where the money goes

  • Shingles and materials19 squares$3,600–$4,600
  • Labormedium roof$4,400–$5,900
  • Tear-off and disposal1 old layer$1,000–$1,600
  • Permit, setup and cleanupDumpster and permit$700–$1,300

What can change it

  • Steeper roofs take longer to work on safely.
  • Each old layer torn off adds labor and dumpster weight.
  • Soft or rotten wood under the shingles only shows once the old roof is off.

Step by step

How to use it

The same steps the Show me how button walks you through in the window, one at a time.

  1. Pick the project

Roof, windows or siding. Each one asks its own simple questions.

  2. Set the size

Slide or tap the plus and minus buttons. A rough guess is fine, because a visit measures the real thing.

  3. Choose a level

Good, better or best materials. Watch the price move as you switch.

  4. Read the price range

A range instead of one price, because every house hides a few surprises. These are sample prices, not a quote.

  5. See where the money goes

Materials, labor, removal and cleanup, each with its own range.

  6. Ask for a written quote

On a contractor's site, this sends your answers and the range to the office. Here it only shows what they would get.

The real thing

What the real version does

On a contractor’s website, the estimator runs on that company’s own prices and ends with a quote request.

  • Your prices, in one place

The ranges come from the contractor’s own price list, kept in one file, so changing a price is one edit.

  • The answers go to the office

Asking for a quote sends the homeowner’s answers and the range they saw, so the first call starts in the right place.

  • Honest about what it is

Tri-State’s calculator shows the permit and New Jersey sales tax, and says plainly that an inspection sets the final price.

Questions

Common questions

Are these real prices?

No. The sample runs on made-up prices that are not any contractor’s price list. A contractor’s estimator uses that company’s own prices.

Why a range instead of one price?

Because a fair price depends on things only a visit shows, like soft wood under old shingles. A range sets expectations and still leads to a written quote.

Under the hood

How it's built

For the technically curious. This is part of our web development work.

Every price is a whole-dollar low and high end stored as data. Each line of the breakdown is priced at both ends, and the range runs from the sum of the lows to the sum of the highs, rounded out to the nearest hundred dollars so it never looks more exact than it is.

The math is plain functions with no screen code, so the page shows the full default estimate before any script runs, and the range glides to its new value as you drag.
