Before you book

What to ask before you book a ride

For an emergency, call 911. These questions are for scheduled trips.

  • State licensing

New Jersey’s Office of Emergency Medical Services, part of the Department of Health, licenses ambulances and mobility assistance vehicles, the wheelchair vans used for medical trips. Ask which license covers the vehicle your trip needs.

  • The right vehicle

A rider who walks with help, one who stays in a wheelchair and one who has to lie down need different vehicles and crews. Describe the rider plainly when you book so the right one arrives.

  • Stairs and access

Steps at the pickup or drop-off, a narrow hallway or a building without an elevator can change the crew size and the price. Mention them when you book.

  • Price and payment

Ask for the price before the trip: the base rate, mileage, waiting time and any return leg. Ask too whether the company bills insurance or expects payment from you.

  • Return trips and waiting

If the rider needs a ride home, ask whether the same crew waits or comes back later, and how waiting time is charged.

  • Who can ride along

Ask whether a family member or aide can travel with the patient, and whether that changes the vehicle or the price.
