Before you hire
What to compare in a flooring quote
Worth asking any flooring company, whether or not it is listed here.
The exact product
Two quotes for "vinyl plank" or "hardwood" can describe different floors. Ask for the brand and product line, the wear layer or thickness, and whether the hardwood is solid or engineered, so you compare like with like.
Subfloor preparation
Leveling, repairs and moisture checks on a concrete slab are often where two prices split. Ask what the quote includes, and how the price changes if the old floor comes up and the subfloor needs work.
Removal and furniture
Find out who pulls up and hauls away the old flooring and who moves the furniture. Some companies include both; others charge for each.
Trim, transitions and stairs
Baseboards, quarter round, thresholds between rooms and stair treads add up. A complete quote lists them instead of leaving them for install day.
Two different warranties
The manufacturer's warranty covers the product and the installer's covers the work. Ask for both in writing, with how long each lasts and what voids it.
Registration in New Jersey
New Jersey's home improvement rules list wall-to-wall carpeting and attached or inlaid floor coverings as home improvement work, so a contractor doing it on a home generally needs a registration number that starts with 13VH (N.J.A.C. 13:45A-17.2). Other states set their own rules, so ask what applies where you live.
